Natural Remedies for Essential Tremor

August 17, 2018

It is important to learn your options when it comes to essential tremor and natural remedies. There are many remedies that have been found to help treat the symptoms of essential tremor. The Mayo clinic has defined essential tremor as a central nervous system disorder resulting in chronic tremors and muscle spasms. The majority of these tremors are caused by some form of genetic mutation, and it is still unknown what exactly causes this condition. Though treatment plans generally include synthetic prescription, certain herbal remedies may be used to help reduce the tremors. In this article, we will share a few of the herbal remedies that have been found to help tremor, and how to use them.

Skullcap is an herbal remedy that has been traditionally used as a mild relaxant, anti-anxiety treatment to help ease tremors. While most research that has been done on the herb has been inconclusive regarding how effective it actually is, the calming properties may be able to help those with essential tremor. The University of Maryland suggests consuming 1-2 grams of Skullcap per day or drinking two to three cups of the tea per day.

A common remedy that will come up when searching for essential tremor and it’s natural remedies is Passionflower. Passionflower has been used for anxiety and seizures throughout America and Europe. Though no one is quite sure why the herb is so beneficial, it is believed that Passionflower lowers brain GABA levels which results in a more relaxed state of being. It is best to consume the herb in three to four servings per day and drink it in a tea.

Valerian has been used for thousands of years to treat restlessness and anxiety. It is one of the most popular herbs to promote relaxation that has been discovered. Valerian is another herb that is consumed through a tea. Consuming Valerian up to three times a day promotes relaxation and can calm tremor symptoms.

Kava Kava was used traditionally as a ceremonial drink on the Pacific Islands, but is more commonly used a relaxing agent. Like some of the other herbs we have discussed, it is not clear why Kava Kava is a relaxing agent. This herb does have risk of liver damage, so it should be consumed carefully and under the supervision of your healthcare professional.

Overall, when learning more about essential tremor and natural remedies, it is important to be in contact with your medical provider to make sure that the herbal solutions are safe for your personal situation and needs. Herbal remedies may be a great way to treat your essential tremor without having to consume medications that may have very harsh side effects, or undergo surgery that may have lasting negative effects. Herbal remedies are common, but need to be taken with caution. Herbs can affect everyone differently, so it is important to make sure you are using high quality ingredients and researching, while consulting your medical professional for guidance.
